Deluxe Edition left the 'Deluxe' part behind | Posted October 22, 2008
Before Skillets latest album, they were a below average rock band who was not very popular, but now with the release of Comatose, their first three singles of their album (“rebirthing”, “the last night, and “older I get”) have been smash hits, as Comatose was the best rock album of the year. And with all great albums, what would it be without the special edition, or as this one is called Comatose Deluxe Edition.

In the past Skillet had used some techno music, but had mainly been a harder rocking band, but Comatose has a much more refined rock sound, but a main reason the album was so popular was lead singer John Cooper’s lyrics. It’s clear that from the first song to the title track that the music is incredibly good. “Rebirthing” and “Comatose” are very impressive rock songs. But some of the rock is a little too hard as Cooper resorts to yelling on “better than drugs” and “falling inside the black” which fall into the back of the album.

A sturdy rock song “whispers in the dark” shows fans that Skillet can offer solid rock music without sounding the same as the previous track. One song that doesn’t quite fit is “those nights’ which is a punk song, and it does not go well with John Coopers voice, but is still a cool song. “The last Night” is also a great rock song about However Skillet saved the best rock tune for last on “looking for angles” which is brilliantly done I everyway and is the highest point of the album.

Another part of what distinguishes Comatose, aside from their rock sound, is their lighter music, which is brilliant and adds the perfect balance to the album. the lighter songs are: “older I get”, “yours to hold” and “don’t say goodbye”. Each one is great, having their own sound that makes them flat out amazing which really makes them the rock on which the album is built.

The bonus content is centered around the new song “live free or let me die”, an intense rock song where John Coopers vocals and the base take too much of the chorus and take away a little bit out of the song. Skillet’s interpretation of “acoustic” isn’t the same as most artists because “rebirthing” and “whispers in the dark” still retain much of their intensity, but it’s fun too hear the former without its booming intro. A mistake would be adding three acoustic versions of already soft songs (“Yours To hold (Acoustic”, “The Older I Get”, and “don’t say goodbye) because little changed during the transition.

The lyrics are another fantastic part of the album, and the most important. “Rebirthing” (‘Tell me when I'm gonna live again/Tell me when I'm gonna breathe you in/Tell me when I'm gonna feel inside/Tell me when I'm gonna feel alive’) and Comatose has similar messages about wakening up to God, though if criticism was taken to its extreme neither mention God and neither necessarily has to. “Older I get” is a great song about relationships with people and putting aside someone pride for friendship )‘It's been way too long for the times we missed/I can't believe it still hurts like this’).

The good rock tune “The Last Night” is the powerful song about a friend who talks someone out of suicide. The epic “Looking for angels” has some of the best lyrics you can find in a song. “Yours to hold” and “don’t say good bye” could be looked at as somewhat pathetic but there is no wrong doing. The extra song “live free or let me die” is vague with some edgy lyrics: ‘There's nothing left to fight (Live free or let me die)/You can't take away my pride, I won't be denied.

Skillet has emerged as a top Christian Rock group by making every song, from beginning to end worthy of a listen. “Comatose” gets high marks for when the music fades there will be the strong messages they send. But the deluxe part in the special edition isn’t much more than a way to get fans to get a little extra at the same price.

WONT BE UNCONCIOUS ROCKING TO THIS! | Posted August 22, 2008
I may have been a bit biased before I bought this cd, as I have been a 'pan head' since 1997. However, keep in mind that at the time they were industrial, and have only John Cooper as the origional member. This cd here includes a track called 'Live free or let me die' that is just great, and should have been on the 1st release of 'Comotose'. I am so blown away by Lori Peters drumming on this cd! She learned how to play double bass pedal in the studio when they went in to record 'Comotose'! She was fantastic. The new drummer Jen has a huge task a head of her replacing Lori. Good luck Jen! Ben Kasica has a great tone on his guitar, and also has great guitar solos on the songs 'Whispers in the dark' 'Rebirthing', and 'Falling inside the black'. The title track 'Comotose' is a powerfull song. The songs 'older I get' and 'say good bye' are more on the sad side. Actually this cd is sort of depressing with the issues it tackles, cutting, abandonment, and loneliness. That said, it is good to put on when you are struggling emotionaly and need to feel compassion and that you are understood. I love this cd, go get it!

I think it is good. The song
that I heard was Comatose I
listen to it everyday I love it.
I think that if you listen to the lyrics
closely then it gives a good message.
I have to give some credit to the guitar
players and drummer they really rocked.
Keep on rockn skillet.

Skillet's best CD | Posted July 23, 2008
Skillet returns with another awesome album. The lyrics are inspiring and touching, while the melodies may cause head-banging and losing yourself to the music. Comatose is very edgy and loud. The band doesn't scream, but the music is still intense, though in a good way. Skillet's style has really improved with every album they release, and I think they have piqued to a high in their greatness. This CD rocks.

This CD intenceifies my world. As I am involved in band and orchestral stuff I like the use of strings. The acoustic versions make the originals almost seem average.

Comatose Deluxe Edition | Posted April 07, 2008
In the smallest amount of words possible-Comatose is sickeningly awesome. It contains everything you want in a record. Each instrument has its solo, but they still combine with great skill. The music is strong and the lyrics cut to the soul. Even the more laid back songs have powerful implications. I'll try my best to describe the songs with words. The original tracks are more than worth mention, so I'll start with those. With it's driving guitar and piano, Rebirthing is worthy of first track status. It is followed by one of the record's biggest hits, The Last Night, which has lyrics that, according to John Cooper, Skillet's frontman, have literally changed the lives of many fans.

The hard rock continues on track four, Better Than Drugs. This is probably the hardest song on the disk, competing only with track eight. It ties as my favorite with the fifth track, Comatose, which is definitely worthy of title track status. The piano in this song really makes it what it is.

My favorite song of the record is Those Nights. It's lighter and more 'musical' than your average Skillet song, but it has some element of familiarity that makes it a work of art.

Next is Falling In The Black. This one is my favorites. It's a pure work of musical hard rock art. Piano, guitar, drums, bass, vocals, and digital parts are in perfect harmony, each with their own skilled accents in various places.

Whispers In The Dark was my favorite when I first bought the album. I am slightly ashamed to say I watched the music video four times in rapid succession. The song has a strong musical flow and driving lyrics, plus it's the only the song with a real guitar solo.

The last song, Looking For Angels, is a difficult song to describe. The verses are spoken rather than sung, and It's a good ending song because it really makes you think about how you live your life.

Mixed into these are some well orchestrated, acousticalish (that's not a real word, but you get the point) songs, but not quite as sick as the others ( Yours to Hold, The Older I Get, Say Goodbye ).

Next comes the Deluxe Edition songs. The first one is Live Free Or Let Me Die. It has an old school Skillet sound to it, and
sounds like it should be in the upcoming Iron Man movie. Or at least the trailer.

Then there's five acoustic tracks of the original songs: Rebirthing, Whispers In The Dark, Yours To Hold, The Older I Get,
and Say Goodbye. The latter three were a stretch, as the originals were almost acoustics themselves, but the band did a pretty good job of keeping it fresh. Whispers In The Dark is my favorite of the five. It has a strange, mystic, almost dark sound to it.

The DVD that came with the Deluxe Edition had some good stuff on it. It contained the three music videos from that
record ( Rebirthing, Whispers In The Dark, and Looking for Angels ). All three of them were great songs, and also well choreographed. The one thing that disappointed me a little was the behind the scenes, which was basically in-studio footage with a backdrop of Yours To Hold.

The bottom line: buy it. I would buy it for twice what I did. The record is a piece of musical art, the music is powerful,
and the lyrics are also. There's one fact that is backed by numerous awards and innumerable fans:Comatose is the rock album of the year.

And the Best Gets Better | Posted March 01, 2008
Skillet tops off their best album to date with a deluxe edition complete with DVD, bonus track and 5 exclusive acoustic cuts. Unbelievable. This album is perfect for pretty much anyone who likes rock music and acoustics. I myself love acoustic versions of pretty much everything so this album was a huge deal to me, considering Skillet is one of my favorite bands. An absolute must have for all Panheads.
