In a world where perception is reality and reality isn't always what it seems, seeking truth is vital to discover what lies beneath the surface. Reality TV, social networking sites, and virtual video games dominate popular culture, and it seems like authenticity is becoming harder and harder to come by. Sometimes things that appear one way eventually reveal themselves to be something completely different. This record is painted full of pictures and stories about how important looking under the surface is. The old adage rings true: What you see isn't always what you get. Many in our culture who seek something authentic find disillusionment and corruption--from financial let-downs, to the abuse of power, to rejected Facebook friend requests. And yet, peace and hope can be found in the most unlikely of packages. Project 86 hopes to remind all with Picket Fence Cartel that peace and hope can be found by walking by faith, not by sight, in the world of false fronts in which we live. Known as a band who has defined their 13 year career with a reputation of excellence from award winning songwriting to a fantastic live show Project 86 offers their 7th full length album. Never afraid of pushing the envelope the group continues to grow and evolve and deliver another set of powerful and dynamic songs. Eleven diverse tracks from Project 86 will impress new and old fans alike.

TOOTH & NAIL VETS KEEP HARD ROCK AND MINISTRY CENTRAL | Posted August 18, 2009
Hard rock chiefs Project 86 have become famous for pushing alternative rock to the limits. In addition, the provocative trio has earned a reputation for slaving over hardcore messages that match their palpitating musical palette. Pounding questions into the psyches of both Christian disciples and questioning seekers for over a decade, the Tooth & Nail veterans unabashedly proclaim their faith as the backbone of their smashing music.

And the band’s seventh full release, Picket Fence Cartel, continues the strains of surrendered resolve. “The Butcher” issues a chorus of salvation-centered defiance to those who threaten to destroy our lives, screaming, “There is no weapon/There is no blade/You wonder why I’m not afraid . . . You’ll never kill Him that lives inside of me.”

Encouraging listeners to worship in spite of circumstances, “Cement Shoes” reveals a collective catechism: “Desperate we will proclaim/That on our knees we’re not ashamed/And so we vow to kneel before You.”

Tailing their most successful record to date, Project 86 forfeits the synth-driven detours of Rival Factions to produce more of its down-home goth rock. The experimental group is infamous for ambiguous and often vague lyrics, and while Picket Fence Cartel is still full of dark scenarios and poetic charm, it’s underlined with a creed-like theme of basic belief.

This project is sure to meet and exceed any expectations the industry and more importantly, fans, have conjured since Project 86’s last release. —Andrew Greer

Project 86 has done it again. Their seventh studio album. They never cease to impress with each album. Each album marks a new style, but still stays consistent with their overall sound. Picket Fence Cartel has been hyped as a return to the heavier side of the band and it is certainly heavier than Rival Factions and even ATRWF. However, I have been more critical of the album than any of their previous. Not to say that is their worst album, I just went into this album less infatuated by the band and less excited for the album. That being said, this is a great album and a must have for hard rock fans. I have a hard time ranking P86 albums but this one would probably be somewhere in the middle of the amazing discography. The only real downfalls are some occasional choruses that Schwab uses some lines that vary in pitch and almost annoy me (primarily Cold and Calculated and Cement Shoes). Highlights of the record include: every song...particularly The Spectacle of Fearsome Acts, Destroyer, and To Sand We Return.
