BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#604 - "You Don't Miss A Thing" by Bethel Music
Bethel worship leader Amanda Cook shares how the smallest movements of God in turn move her entire world.

Bethel Music has introduced and developed several amazing worship leaders, including Brian and Jenn Johnson, Amanda Cook, Steffany Gretzinger, William Matthews, Matt Stinton and Hunter Thompson. We Will Not Be Shaken released everywhere January 27, featuring eleven original worship songs all beautifully produced for the Church. These songs were written from a place of reflecting on what it means to have unshakable faith in God. The project is intended to lead listeners to that place also.

Every song released by Bethel Music completely focuses me as a listener on joining in praise, worship and adoration of Jesus. All of these songs are poignant and powerful with earnest, worshipful lyrics. We Will Not Be Shaken will be one of the top worship albums of the year. It is truly a moving and prayerful worship experience.

The theme of how through God's strength we will not be shaken weaves through all of the songs, a message that all believers need to hear. This album is best described as a worship experience with an ethereal tone. These anointed worship leaders have consistently impressed me with their mature faith and sincere desires to serve Jesus.

If you are looking for new worship songs to sing with fellow believers, this album is chock-full of congregational songs, especially the female led worship songs "Ever Be," "You Don't Miss a Thing," "Nearness," "You Are My One Thing" and "In Over My Head." I had the chance to speak with Amanda Cook about "You Don't Miss a Thing."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

This is a song that has been begging to be written for my whole life. It comes out in every little spontaneous moment or thought, and there have been traces of this song in anything I've attempted to write or put to music. It is such a personal statement and such a broad visual.

For me, I've always been stunned by the very thought of God. The thought of God makes me pause and wonder. If I wonder long enough, I wonder about His greatness and Him being God. It starts to transform my thinking about any situation and thought, or patterns that I am in. It prioritizes everything.

With the imaginative language of picturing the slightest movements of God and being completely complete in Himself, full of love and kindness and never stepping outside of those attributes, the slightest movement by God or whisper of God's voice creates an earth shattering reality for myself as a human being. I wanted to express that to Him for myself and how I process that, kind of like a personal psalm.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Zephaniah 3:17 (The Voice): The Eternal your God is standing right here among you, and He is the champion who will rescue you. He will joyfully celebrate over you; He will rest in His love for you; He will joyfully sing because of you like a new husband.

Psalm 29:5 (NKJV): The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars. Yes, the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon.

Psalm 95:7-9 (VOICE): For He is our God and we are His people, the flock of His pasture, His sheep protected and nurtured by His hand. Today, if He speaks, hear His voice. "Don't harden your hearts the way they did in the bitter uprising at Meribah or like that day they complained in the wilderness of Massah. Your ancestors tested Me, wanted Me to prove Myself though they had seen that nothing was too great for Me."

1 John 4:18-19 (NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us."

What is the takeaway message?

I read the Psalms, read how those men would put their descriptions of God like "the voice of the Lord smashes the cedars" and visuals of God's voice being like a "mighty wind." There are all of these alliterations and visuals trying to describe the sound of God, the feeling of God, or the sight of God and the reaction of a human being. For me, really this whole song is about pondering those ideas. It was an epiphany. His slightest movements towards me create a ripple effect in my life. When He sighs, the wind becomes a sonnet. It becomes a poem and life.

This song is about placing myself as a human being before the Lord of Lords and being drawn into the reality that even though He's so Majestic and Big, He's Emmanuel, He's with me and He doesn't miss a thing. He's so God, and yet He's so present. That's the mystery for me, living in the tension of that, throwing myself into that mystery and knowing that I am seen and known— to be discovered by Him and discover Him and spend the rest of my life pursuing that reality.

Lyrics:
When You stand
I feel the floor of Heaven tremble
As You breathe
We live and have our being
When You speak
Oh I feel it in my chest
When You sing
All my fears are put to rest

What a wondrous thing
I can stand to sing
Cause when I fall to my knees,
You're the One who pulls me up again

What a mystery
That You notice me
And in a crowd of ten thousand
You don't miss a thing

When You sigh
The wind becomes a sonnet
When You laugh
The storm around me ceases
You whisper
And all my enemies are scattered
You surround me
With angels on assignment

There's no place I can go that You're love won't find me
No place I can hide that You don't see
No place I could fall and Your love couldn't catch me
You see it all, You see it all
Through the eyes of love, oh whoa, oh oh

So come and see me, come and know me
Come and search my heart and make me like You, like You
I just want to be like You
Come and see me, come and know me
Come and search my heart, and make me new, make me new
I want it, just like You

This song totally moves me in my personal worship time. The song is an ethereal vertical worship ballad in the style of "God, I Look to You," sung with a stirring passion and filled with prayerful declarations. This is an incredible song for the Church. Like her great songs "I Will Exalt" and "You Make Me Brave," you'll worship Jesus right along with Amanda.

Right from the opening notes, you'll be captivated by the melody and message of this amazing song. The song celebrates one of the truths we can cling to as believers. In our fallen and sinful tendencies, God still thinks of us as His children. Once you've accepted Jesus as our substitute and Savior, God views us as white as snow through the blood of His Son instead of in our dirty states. That alone is cause for celebration.

"You Don't Miss a Thing" reflects the yearning for Jesus that I pray for my daughters to feel in their hearts as well. Every song released by Bethel Music completely focuses me as a listener on joining in praise, worship and adoration of our beautiful King Jesus. This song is a modern day psalm singing about God's attributes and how much He loves us. You can know Jesus personally. Reach out to Him and know with certainty: "perfect love casts out fear."

This song is beautiful, encouraging me in how much God loves me. The thought that God rejoices over us with singing is incredible. He is worthy of all of our praise and devotion.  In his devotional book Glory Revealed, David Nasser says: "Every song we sing to the Lord is a duet and not a solo.  The most marvelous thing about a relationship with God is that it is truly a dialogue. We aren't just sitting here on Earth worshipping a Creator who simply soaks us our love, rather He's so involved in our affection, He's in the midst of it."

When you listen to the lyrics "When You sing, all my fears are put to rest," allow the thought to bring you to a place of worship. There is no fear in love. He wants a relationship with us, and He is rejoicing over us, which blows me away every time I think about it. Sing back to Him "Come and search my heart and make me like You, like You, I just want to be like You, Come and see me, come and know me, Come and search my heart, and make me new." Amen to that!
