BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#106 - "Walk On The Water" by Britt Nicole
NRT Contributor Kevin Davis speaks with Britt Nicole on her latest single from her sophomore release, The Lost Get Found.

Britt Nicole released her debut album, Say It, on Sparrow Records in 2007. That album spawned the hits "You," "Set the World On Fire" and "Believe." Her current single, “Walk On The Water,” is her newest hit song from her sophomore album, The Lost Get Found.

The Lost Get Found in Britt’s words is "simply about being who we are called to be as Christians, and through that, seeing the lost get found. I believe that when we become who we are called to be, the lost will come to know God. They will see that God is real, and that His love is greater than any problem, any fear, any sickness."

The success of “Walk On The Water” merely follows the precedent of what has been Britt’s biggest project to date. "God has been so faithful to me, so first and foremost I want to thank Him for giving me songs that help others,” says Britt. “I have never been so moved by people calling into the stations and sending me letters on how "Walk on the Water" has helped them. Thank you to my EMI team and radio for helping me to carry this message of hope to so many that I could have never reached on my own." Reaching even more ears, "Walk on the Water" was selected to air during the March 23rd episode of NBC’s reality hit The Biggest Loser.

I recently got the chance to interview Britt about the single and this was our conversation.

Please tell me the story behind the song "Walk On The Water."

It was the last song I wrote for the record. We were literally finishing the song the day before the final recording, so it almost didn’t make it on the album. We had ten songs already finished, and I wanted to write one more song that reflected what is was like growing up with a single mom who raised me and my brother on her own. She was so busy working she never got to pursue any of her own personal dreams. My mom has always had a dream to open a home for girls, so I wrote this song for my mom and people like her to reach for their dreams and to remind them not to let doubt get in the way or think that it's too late to be used by God. I've often encouraged my mom to pursue her dreams, and now she has opened up our family home in North Carolina, where she allows young girls to live in our home while helping them pursue their dreams.

Do you have a life verse or any Bible verses you used when writing this song?

My life verse is 1 Chronicles 28:20: And David said to his son Solomon, "Be strong and of good courage, and do it; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD God—my God—will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you, until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.

This song is based on Matthew 14:29-31: So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

What's the take-away message for listeners?

This song is all about having a strong faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Sometimes we have a tendency to think we can try to know everything. God tells us in the Bible that with faith, we can do anything in Christ. The theme of most of the songs on the album is about reaching out in faith--whether in evangelism or in your chosen profession or about not being afraid to step out in faith--and be used by God in a ministry. I spent the first two weeks of the year in Africa on a missions trip. One of the lessons I’ve learned from this experience is that we shouldn’t wait to fix ourselves before we step out in faith. We need to fully trust God.

Here are the lyrics:

You look around and staring back at you
Another wave of doubt
Will it pull you under
You wonder
What if I’m overtaken
What if I never make it
What if no one’s there
Will you hear my prayer
When you take that first step
Into the unknown
You know that He won’t let you go

So what are you waiting for
What do you have to lose
Your insecurities
They try to hold to you
But you know you’re made for more
So don’t be afraid to move
Your faith is all it takes
And you can walk on the water too

So get out and let your fear fall to the ground
No time to waste, don’t wait
And don’t you turn around, and miss out on
Everything you were made for
Gotta be, I know you’re not sure, more
So you play it safe, you try to run away
If you take that first step
Into the unknown
He won’t let you go

Step out. even when it’s storming
Step out, even when you’re broken
Step out, even when your heart is telling you, telling
you to give up
Step out, when your hope is stolen
Step out, you can’t see where you’re going
You don’t have to be afraid
So what are you waiting, what are you waiting for

The first part of the chorus, “what are you waiting for,” has been resonating with me as I realize that Jesus commands me to trust God completely, no matter what my circumstances, personal distractions or concerns may be. The end of the song includes some great challenges to step out, even when you want to give up, or can’t see where you’re going. We can’t possibly know everything, and we are not in control. But trusting in God gives us the assurance that we don’t have to be afraid. God will be there to pick us up when we fall. For me, the challenge when I listen to this song is to pick an area of my life that I’ve been trying to control, and instead “step out” in faith as I put all of my hope and trust in God. What are you waiting for? Step out.
