BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#262 - "Ready to Save" by Satellites & Sirens
Frontman Geoff Hunker tells NRT's Kevin Davis about how his band's experiences with people on the road served as the basis for this single.

“Ready To Save” by Satellites & Sirens has permeated my soul, and I find myself regularly singing the hope-filled chorus:“There is a Love that you’ve been waiting for, there is an answer, there is a cure, There’s a Healer, He’s ready to save you, He’s ready to save you, He’s ready to save.”

“Life, in general, is noise,” says Geoff Hunker, lead singer and founder of the Dove Award nominated alternative rock band, who released their second album Frequency on Oct. 11. “And we busy ourselves so much that a lot of times we miss out on hearing what God’s direction is.”

The band consists of Hunker, Jonathan Dimmel, David Troyer and Dave Willey. They are a band both defined by and concerned with what it means to make music in a world filled with the deafening voices of the Information Age. Their sound is a modern take on the popular synth-pop of the ‘80s, blending synthesizers with rock guitars overtop of interesting grooves. Satellites & Sirens’ goal is to hear God’s message and loudly proclaim it to the kids of today’s generation.

I had the chance to speak with lead singer Geoff Hunker about first single “Ready To Save.”

Please tell me about the background message behind the song "Ready To Save."

We really appreciate the chance to share about this song. This message of this song is really our heart as a band. As we travel around and meet people and learn about all of the pain they go through, a lot of the kids we meet feel like they are alone in their pain. That was a big reason we wanted to write this song. We want to let listeners know that they are not alone. We have a God that is there to be the Healer of our diseases, and for Him to carry our burdens.

Do you have a life verse or any Bible verses you used in writing the song?

Philippians 3:8-11: “What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.”

What do you consider to be the takeaway message for listeners?

When we realize who Jesus really is, and we get to know Him, we will understand that He is our Healer, He is our cure, He is our love and He is the answer. He’s ready to save us if we’ll submit to Jesus. The theme of this new album Frequency is love. Being an imperfect human race, we’ve made love something God didn’t intend. There’s definitely a yearning on this album to bring people back to the point of what God intended. There are lyrics in the title track “let’s live and love in stereo.” We want people to think about how wide and deep God’s love is for us. In relationships, we need to love people fully. Knowing that Christ’s love is so vast, He laid down on a Cross for us. Knowing that, we want people to love others the way that Christ loves us.

Lyrics:
I see the lines streaming down your face
They tell me that you’re not ok
Why are you afraid
I see the bruises on your knees
It tells me that you've been here
Crying out for days

When did you stop believing
There was hope for you
When will you realize
You will make it through

There is a love, You've been waiting for
There is an answer, There is a cure
There is a healer, Who's ready to save you
He's ready to save you
He's ready to save

I see the scars on your arms
They're telling me your story
They're showing me your heart
I see the failure in your eyes
It tells me that you’re fading
Like a picture over time

When did you stop believing
There was hope for you
When will you realize
You will make it through

There is a love, You've been waiting for
There is an answer, There is a cure
There is a healer, Who's ready to save you
He's ready to save you
He's ready to save

Breakdown, breakdown let it out
Don't hold the hand of another doubt
You gotta know, yeah you gotta know
There's something more to this life if you let go

There is a love, You've been waiting for
There is an answer, There is a cure
There is a healer, Who's ready to save you
He's ready to save you
He's ready to save

Asbury’s Bible commentary: “Christ is now Paul's ‘magnificent obsession.’ Note the ‘intensely personal’ expression: ‘Christ Jesus my Lord.’ Knowing Him is the surpassing greatness. This knowledge is not merely theoretical or theological; it is experiential. Paul yearns to be found in Him, having God's righteousness. Again we see a key concept of Paul: in Him. To be in Christ by faith is to be in the sphere of God's redemptive actions. The emphasis on righteousness (rightness with God) through faith—union with Christ is the core of Paul's religion and the evangelical Protestant principle.”

We can’t know everything and we are not in control, but trusting God gives us assurance that we don’t have to be afraid. God will be there to pick us up when we fall. The challenge for me when I listen to this song is pick an area of my life that I’ve been trying to control and instead cry out to Jesus for help and put all of my hope and trust in God.

At some point, we all make mistakes and need to ask God for forgiveness. This song really brings me comfort, especially in the bridge: “Breakdown, breakdown let it out, Don't hold the hand of another doubt, You gotta know, yeah you gotta know, There's something more to this life if you let go.”

God wants to give us His grace and mercy, we need to fall down at His feet and pray. Believing the words of this song is a great way to work on the disciplines of self-examination and prayer. You can know Jesus personally. Reach out to Him and know with certainty: “There is a love, You've been waiting for, There is an answer, There is a cure, There is a healer, Who's ready to save you, He's ready to save you, He’s ready to save.” Amen!

Kevin Davis is a longtime fan of Christian music, an avid music collector and credits the message of Christian music for leading him to Christ.
