BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS, #364 -
Kyle Sherman: "When I sing this song now, I sing it from a father’s heart. It helps me grasp our Father’s heart a little bit better, and reminds me that there’s nothing we could do to ever push God away."
Owners of the Texas Rangers, Bob and Janice Simpson, unleash their latest venture RayLynn Records, a new Christian music label for emerging performers. On October 9, 2012, the label unveiled its first project Hear Me, from flagship artist Kyle Sherman.

After years of being a worship leader, Sherman was discovered by the Simpson's while singing at his home church in Ft. Worth, TX. Three years later Sherman joined forces with veteran producer and country singer-songwriter Mark Collie (Martina McBride, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks) resulting in a project that is an eclectic and authentic mix of rootsy, southern soul.

"It's crazy how God works," says Sherman. "Five years ago, I pushed pretty hard to do my own thing as a singer/songwriter, but every well I approached would dry up. It clearly wasn't the right time."

Music listeners have been introduced to Sherman through his new radio single, "Come to Me," which is continuing to impact AC Radio stations across the country. Additionally, the debut album features captivating anthems including "The Greatest Tear" and "Hallelujah." Sherman draws inspiration from heavy-hitters like David Crowder Band, Needtobreathe, and Eric Clapton while still taking on a style that is uniquely his own. You can click here to read my full review of the album.

RayLynn Records aims to serve as a launch pad for breakthrough artists and seeks to share the Gospel through music and the artists they represent. "From day one we recognized Kyle's incredible talent as a worship leader at our church," says Bob Simpson, co-founder of RayLynn Records. "However, what started as a belief in our ability to back Kyle's musical endeavors financially, turned into a flourishing relationship where we had the opportunity to become a part of his project. It has been such an honor for my wife and I to create RayLynn records and to collaborate with Kyle on songs like “Come to Me” which will help further God's Word."

I recently spoke with Kyle about his debut single and the biblical inspirations behind it.

Please tell me about the background message behind the song "Come To Me."

This song has been a blessing to me from the very first time I heard the demo. My producer, Mark Collie, co-wrote the song with the co-founder of RayLynn records, Janice Simpson. The song was something that had been on Janice’s heart for a long time. She felt God was putting it on her heart to share it, even though she didn’t know how to write a song. She felt strongly about those lyrics, based on Matthew 11:28, and it’s the type of scriptural Truth that never gets old. One of the strong things about the message of this song is that it feels like presenting the Gospel in the form of a song. One of my favorite Bible passages is 1 Peter 5:7, where it says to “cast all your anxiety upon Him because He cares for you.” I always thought that was such a sweet verse. Not only did God make us and save us from death, but He actually cares about our daily well-being. Jesus wants us to be happy. It doesn’t mean life will be perfect but He cares for us.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Matthew 11:28: Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

1 Peter 5:6-7: Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

What's the take-away message for listeners regarding the song?

When I sing this song, my mind goes straight to the Matthew 11 passage, “Come to Me, all you who are weary.” My mind also goes to the other passages where Jesus tells us that He isn’t upset with us when maybe we’ve run away from Him, or gotten weary. In fact Jesus cares about us, and loves us deeply, so come to Him. I think those scriptures have come into better focus for me having kids of my own. With my three year old, and my eighteen month old, something just snapped in me with my daughter Layla that there’s nothing she could do, nowhere she could run, far enough or do anything bad enough, that would cause me for one second to falter in my love for her. When I sing this song now, I sing it from a father’s heart. It helps me grasp our Father’s heart a little bit better, and reminds me that there’s nothing we could do to ever push God away. I would like people to hold on to the truth of this song. Satan likes to get us alone and tell us we are worse than everyone else, and we don’t deserve God’s love. One of the lies people believe about themselves, Christians and non-Christians alike, is that they are too dirty for God’s love. No matter who you are, or what you’ve done, I want people to find hope from this song that they can come back home to Jesus.

Lyrics:

His name is Jesus, He is waiting
He is calling in a whisper
And if you’re listening, You can feel it
His Holy Spirit, Drawing nearer

He’s calling come to me, Come to me
If you’re hurting, if you’re lost
He’s calling come to me, Come to me
Leave your troubles at the cross

His grace is wondrous, Never-ending
Everlasting, is His love
No matter where you’ve been, Or what you’ve done
There is forgiveness if you’ll only come

He’s calling come to me, Come to me
If you’re hurting, if you’re lost
He’s calling come to me, Come to me
Leave your troubles at the cross

He’s calling come to me, Come to me
If you’re hurting, if you’re lost
He’s calling come to me, Come to me
Leave your troubles at the cross

Jesus is calling…Jesus is calling…calling to you and me
Oh, hear the whisper of His voice…calling…calling…

Come to me, Come to me, Leave your troubles at the cross…

Asbury’s Bible commentary: “The apostle, knowing that these Christians were already under very hard circumstances, rightly supposes that what he had foretold of greater hardships yet a coming might excite in them abundance of care and fear about the event of these difficulties, what the issue of them would be to themselves, their families, and the church of God; foreseeing this anxious care would be a heavy burden, and a sore temptation, he gives them the best advice, and supports it with a strong argument. His advice is to cast all their care, or all care of themselves, upon God.”

We all need to remember that earth isn’t our permanent home and our freedom from the restlessness of this world will come when we enter the true rest that can only come from living eternally with Jesus Christ. This song has become a personal worship anthem for me to sing daily and remember that “everything under the sun is meaningless.” As St. Augustine put it so perfectly, “our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

We sometimes put up a wall between us and God and He just wants us to come home to Him. Many of us feel that we’re not worthy of being near God and that He’s using a checklist to determine our worthiness. That’s not the Gospel.  The Good News of the Gospel which this song perfectly portrays it is that God accepts us no matter what we’ve done.  As the song says, “No matter where you’ve been, Or what you’ve done, There is forgiveness if you’ll only come.” What a wonderful, encouraging truth.

"Come To Me" connects to the biblical Truth found in Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." God loves you so much. Lean on Him and He’ll give you strength. If you are a follower of Jesus, you can know for certain that God is singing these words over you: “Come to me, Come to me, Leave your troubles at the cross…” Amen!
