The Moon & Other Thoughts
Category: Misc Thoughts
Views: 27

How about those SATs? Yeah, I'm not going to advocate their complete ban as an academic indicator for colleges. The whole test, how you take the test and otherwise is a complete joke. But hey, I now have a life, a life in which I can blog about the Moon. I would Tweet about my thoughts about the Moon, but the Moon takes up too much space.

On Friday, NASA bombed the Moon. Why? Because they wanted to find water so they could colonize the Moon. That night I watched the 2002 version of The Time Machine. Bad Idea! Why? Because in the movie, our 1900s hero travels to the year 2030 and finds that the moon is being colonized, and work is going to begin the bomb the moon to get underground so humans can live in the subterranean levels of the Moon, so more people can colonize up there. Our hero travels 7 years in the future and finds a apocalyptic wasteland. New York City is in ruins, buildings smashed and collapsed, and the surface getting the crap beat out of it from a steady show of falling rocks. Where are these rocks coming from? Apparently that bombing overworked and literally broke the Moon. As a result, the Moon is coming back to Earth, and has thrown the blue ball out of its normal orbit. Fast forward 800,000 years and our hero looks a the Moon which looks like a cluster of large rocks in the sky.

Now, I'm sure the science of this scenario is completely crap, and would not bring about the end of humanity and civilization as we know it, but still! Don't go bombing the Moon, NASA, play it safe and don't take any chances!

Wow, it seems everytime I come to NRT, which isn't often enough it seems like Kevin has added something new. So props to the Admin himself!

Props to Owl City for their success too! It's amazing how Fireflies was first a free single back in early July, then I praised Ocean Eyes as being a great and original work, and from their it's just built up into what I predicted Fireflies to be, the underground hit of the year. It's gone from underground to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Think about that for a second. As of this writing, Fireflies is officially the 11th most popular song in America. It's great to see in sea of a constant stream of bad music that something great is actually getting some recognition as such.

Also in mainstream music news, even though it's only October, Lady GaGa wins Mainstream Artist of the Year in my mind. Why? Her songs exploded, she's outrageous, she has a great/weird sense of fashion, she's a good actress and quite funny, her music is pretty decent, she added new terms to pop culture, we also asked questions about her we probably shouldn't have asked. If all that wasn't enough, not only can she do the processed dance track, but she has a stunningly good voice, and she slays the best of them acoustically on the piano.

Hopefully I will have time one day to explain the popularity of the Zombie Apocalypse, and why the fascination behind it.

The Top 5 Most Anticipated Albums of the 2nd Half of 2009!
Category: Music
Views: 148

Is it safe to say that 2009 thus far has been a snore, musically? Sure, there's been some good stuff, but nothing classic or memorable. So, put on some optimism and pray Fall & Winter 2009 brings us something to remember the year by.

5. Phil Wickham: "Heaven & Earth"
This one's for WookieChew! Besides, with the delays, the anticipation only rises!

4. Hawk Nelson: "Live Out Loud"
While I don't like the album cover, it's Hawk Nelson and it'll be interesting to see if they can continue their trademark energy & momentum.

3. Switchfoot: "Hello Hurricane"
When was the last time Switchfoot released a brand-new album? Try 2006. Sure, they've been on the decline since "The Beautiful Letdown," but they're independent now, and I imagine they're ready to come back out of the gate. The results should be pretty interesting.

2. Family Force 5: "The Family Force 5 Christmas Pageant"
The insane crunk/rock/dance band doing a Christmas album? This could be the most original Christmas album since Relient K did one, and it could surpass it depending on how it's done. Can you imagine the potential FF5 treatment of "My Favorite Things?"

1. Relient K: "Forget and Not Slow Down"
What? You expected me to pick somebody other than the best band on Earth? Not a chance. Let me count the reasons for high anticipation. First, Relient K is never content to remain comfortable and they always go 111%, expect new sounds and directions from the band. Secondly, new lyrical gems from Matt Thiessen who appeared a lot outside Relient K writing for Kelly Clarkson and appearing with Owl City, and if he's that good outside of his own band, imagine what he can do with his own band. Thirdly, it's a new chapter since their debut was almost ten years ago, and they have a new drummer for his first full record. Fourthly, look at this awesome pre-order deal! http://relientk.skyroo.com/se/view/music/index.html

Yeah, I'll be getting the "Super Fan Pack" for the most anticipated album of the year. I think the back-half of 2009 should be pretty good after all...

Me & A Commentary on the State of Christian Music & The Church
Category: Misc Thoughts
Views: 57

I haven't posted since the end of May?!? Believe it or not, I'm still alive, but for an aspiring journalist/writer, I get writer's block or laziness a lot, which might explain why I've relegated myself to reviews and 140 characters or less.

Or maybe it's because there hasn't really been anything interesting to talk about in Christian music this year. Sure, we've had a few great albums, but nothing overwhelming so far, which leads me to a theory I've been working on where Christian music's golden age was from 1994-2004, and true quality nowadays is few and far between. Old standbyes are stuck in the ever enduring ruts, and they go for the easy radio-friendly stuff, choosing to go no further in their artistry.

Sure, they're touching lives, but artists like MercyMe aren't having the impact on the world they once did when 'I Can Only Imagine' came out. I don't mean artists have to reach out beyond their boundaries, but I just don't feel the heart in a lot of CCM nowadays. Where I do find heart is the new bands like Tenth Avenue North in songs like 'By Your Side.' When these artists are first starting out, that's when their most eager to share the word of God, but as they go along, it seems like they're just running the motions.

Far be it from me to judge, but it almost seems like a commentary on the Christian church today. It seems like we've found our contentment in Christ, and we don't want that relationship to change for fear of not understanding his more complex ways, or accept the harder truths. Let's face it, simple words can never describe God, and we need to pray that receive a new fire to praise him. Not all the Church is this way today, and I've seen several instances of this in various younger movements, but it seems for the most part, we're on cruise control, and that's fine for now. Just know that as we approach his coming, our growth will accelerate quickly.

So until those days come, I think the Golden Age of Christian music was from 1994-2004, where we were just a bunch of Jesus Freaks.

Wow, that was DEEP. Hopefully I'll be able to talk about how my opinion has changed on FM Static's latest album soon, but until then, you can find me at Twitter.com/jeremymlucas or if you want my other links, my central hub is at http://www.google.com/profiles/jeremymatthewlucas

Until then, God Bless, & don't worry, I'm still alive.

Also, I can't wait till the new Relient K comes out in October, so hopefully they'll lift my musical spirits.

Wow, since the last best-of I have over a thousand Tweets now, and I'm milking it for all I can.
