What happened to the Punk?

Punk rock, in my experience, is a style of music that bridges gap between pop and rock. Punk rock has an energy that may be associated with pop, but the music itself has elements (such as style of guitar and drums) that can be related with "heavier" genres (such as alternative).

For some reason unknown to me, Christian punk rock seems to be disappearing from new music. Bands that started out with a punk rock style, are seemingly mellowing. An example of this are the bands of Relient K and Hawk Nelson (all rights to the band names and works go to the respective bands). The early works of both (at least after they were assigned to a noteworthy record company) had a definite punk rock flair (for evidence of this, check out Hawk Nelson's CD's "Letters to the President" and "Smile It's the End of the World," and Relient K's CD's "Anatomy of the Tongue and Cheek" and "Two Lefts Don't Make a Right. . .But Three Do" [I admit I have not heard Relient K's first CD, which is self-titled]), but their later works are mellowing some, sounding more like contemporary or pop. For example when one compares Relient K's CD "Mmhmm" to their more recent release "Forget and Not Slow Down," one will readily notice the change in style. A similar change can be noted when comparing Hawk Nelson's CD's "Smile It's the End of the World" and "Live Life Loud"; in Hawk Nelson's CD "Crazy Love," the band attempts to bring back some of the punk style, but they are not completely succesful (though songs like "Skeleton" are a good effort).

Some claim that the bands styles are maturing. I do not miond when the style bands play "matures," but I believe they can mature without forsaking their original punk rock sound (for instance, compare Relient K's CD "Anatomy of the Tongue and Cheek" to their CD "Mmhmm"). I wish more bands still had a good punk rock sound, and something tells me that I am not alone in this opinion.
