Derek Webb Interview & Concert 8/17/08 Category: Music Views: 1295
I had the great privilege to spend the evening with Derek Webb as my church hosted him for our church service and a concert on Sunday, 8/17/08.
Derek is a member of the band Caedmon's Call and is the writer and singer of some of my favorite songs on the album 40 Acres, including Thankful, Somewhere North & Faith My Eyes.
Derek left Caedmon's to make his own solo album in 2003 called She Must And Shall Go Free which is about how Jesus loves the Church. I've been a big fan of Derek's and appreciate Derek's perspective regarding his Christian walk. Derek participated in our 6 p.m. church service and started by singing Lover, my favorite song by Derek, which is sung from the perspective of Jesus coming to set us free. Then, Derek said he "hoped it wasn't too early in the evening for sarcasm" and sang A New Law, which led into our discussion on Derek's viewpoints.
One of the highlights was when Derek talked about Mockingbird, quoting Derek: "We are set free, but unto what? If the thing that I've been talking about on these records, if the message is about being set free and liberated by Christ, if that's true, then the big question becomes, How do we live in light of that freedom? What are the fruits of that freedom? There's a point at which the rubber of our theology must hit the road of ethics. There's a point at which, if we pride ourselves in knowing about God's character, our knowledge of that character must inform the way that we love and live with people."
After our discussion, Derek sang Rich Young Ruler, an amazing song based on Luke 18:18-24.
Then, after an opening 4 song set by Derek's friend Joe Bassett, we got an hour long concert where Derek sang the following songs.
1)A Love That's Stronger Than Our Fear
2)What's So Funny ('Bout Peace, Love & Understanding)-cover of Elvis Costello song
3)Nobody Loves Me
4)A New Law
5)Name
6)I Wanna Marry You All Over Again
7)Medication
8)I Hate Everything (But You)
9)A King And A Kingdom
10)My Enemies Are Men Like Me
11)Wedding Dress
12)A Savior On Capitol Hill
13)This Too Shall Be Made Right
Derek Webb gives a great concert and the biblical truth of his lyrics really challenge you to process how to live out your faith, which is why he is one of my favorite singer-songwriters.
