I like-Variety (in my music taste)
Category: Music

Hey, I like to go shopping now and then (and this is coming from a guy). I like to go to my local Wal-Mart and K-Mart to browse through the various aisles (basically the electronic, book, and sometimes clothing). In those stores, there is one common thread...variety.

Variety...where there is not the same item, but many. What does this have to do with Christian music??? Well, consider this...

Since the 1960's, the Christian community has seen different types of music that has been catered to the Christian community. Starting with Rock music, then progressing to metal, hip-hop, R&B, and so on...

My point is this. Let's go back before "Contemporary Christian Music" was around. Many people sang hymns (or other "new" stuff). Back then, there was only one type of music for the Church...Gospel music. Hmm, Gospel music..."Southern" and "Black". The only place to preform this music was in Church.

When "Contemporary Christian Music" was developed, we saw the gospel message being spread through other venues...arenas, pop radio, and even camp-fires.

Now there is a phrase that says "you can satisfy some of the people some of the time, but you cannot satisfy all of the people all the time." Or something to that nature. The fact that we have different types of music that can be called "Christian" can make the community divided on the issue. Some prefer rock. Some prefer black (or southern) gospel, or Contemporary, or this and that.

I do however have a warning about the issue of the variety of music available in the Christian community...not one type of music style is better than the other (well, at least to me). I can get a great message from a Gaither CD and at the same time, get a great message from a Petra CD. I can get an equally great message from a BarlowGirl CD as with a Kierra "Kiki" Sheard CD, or even a Finnish CD (HB).

My point is this, just because you do not prefer a certain style of music, does not make that style any lesser important. So, if you do not like Christian Metal, that's ok to me. I do try a variety of music, and it is pleasurable. Just (musicwise) keep an open mind to it.

The music of the song is NOT as important as the MESSAGE. I am going to close out this blog with a lyric from Matt Redman:

When the music fades
And all is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
Something that's of worth
That will bless your heart

I'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the ways things appear
You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You
All about You, Jesus
I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You
It's all about You Jesus

King of endless worth
No one could express
How much You deserve
Though I'm weak and poor
All I have is Yours
Every single breath

I'll bring You more than just a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You
All about You, Jesus
I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You
It's all about You Jesus

Its all about you
Jesus
