Glorifying the Lord to a powerful rock rhythm | Posted August-19-2009
It was a year ago at Revelation Generation in NJ that I first saw Skillet live. I knew their hits but was so jazzed by their live show which moved me to backtrack and find their earlier music. I'd have to say Comatose was my favorite (and really enjoyed the Live album and DVD).
I've been waiting for Awake and have enjoyed hearing Hero and Monster over the last months since their release - pre-ordered it as soon as I could. No disappointment! It is everything we've been waiting for.
The production is amazing on top of the writing, the playing and the singing. I hope there is the kind of crossover success that would bring this great music to a wider audience - no reason any number of these songs couldn't be mainstream hits.
The band still keeps their priorities straight - it's all an offering to the Lord and a proclamation of the Gospel.
I'm looking forward to the Awake tour coming to Philadelphia in October.

Another GEM from Jars of Clay | Posted April-21-2009
I knew the cd was coming out soon but was surprised to find it at WalMart on "release day" and just had to pick it up. I've been drawn to the band from the beginning - I remember seeing them sing "Flood" on the Today show way way back in the day. I saw them last fall as part of the "Music Builds Tour" with Third Day and Switchfoot and thoroughly enjoyed their all to brief set.
This is excellent pop-rock music and I can imagine some of these songs crossing over from the Christian music world into the wider market. Would that be a bad thing??? I surely don't think so. They guys sing about love and relationships and the struggle to live genuine lives that matter and make a difference in the real world. Christian artists don't have to talk about God or about Jesus explicitly in every song they write and sing. Even without it, there is an unmistakable foundation to their writing and we know that these are people committed and centered in the right place. An impressive piece of work. Listen closely. Enjoy.

Changing My Mind | Posted March-31-2009
It seems like it must have been a year ago I heard "I Am . . . Still" on my local Christian Radio station. What is this? I asked myself. It was infectious. It was powerful. I loved it. But I don't like Rap. I don't like Hip-Hop. There was something about this song that began to change my thinking.
Now The Tonic's album is out and the change is complete. This is powerful stuff. The teaching, the doctrine, the theology is clear and yet the beat, the music is engaging - grabbing you and not letting go until you hear the powerful Word of God and know that God's love is real and that it is for you.
Even the breaks and the interludes are fun and yet meaningful. Tonic's visit to his doctor let us in on his struggles and yet is a victorious declaration of how God has been working in his life.
Personal favorites are "The Signature", "No Time", and, of course, "I Am . . . Still".
You have to get this album!
