Misty’s love letters

While the name Misty Edwards may be synonymous with artistically-minded worship leadership, when it comes to the brand new release Little Bird, which comes on the heels of critically lauded Only a Shadow, there’s a decidedly different slant towards the singer/songwriter side of this immensely talented artist. Misty aims to create songs that inspire listeners and refresh the soul.

Opening track "Womb of the Morning," is an engaging song with Misty's passionate vocals setting the tone for this solid effort with the confessional lyrics, "It’s like we’re sitting in the dark and we don’t know it, like we’re hidden behind a veil, and we don’t know it, just like a baby in the womb, they don’t know there’s more than just the darkness." The reflective opener gives a glimpse of how Misty’s walk with Jesus influences these ‘gourmet’ gems.

“Invisible One” has a super-catchy musical vibe and is a wonderful prayer-song about finding regular strength and courage in God's faithful kindness and listening to what our “Invisible” God has to say to us as believers. The poignant lyrics provide personal and spiritual truths, “Even the sunlight declares You are there…the only access is through Jesus.”

I can’t get enough of title track “Little Bird” which has an incredible musical hook including hand claps. Misty trusts in the Lord throughout this brilliant song offering her younger self advice based on the biblical phrasing, “His eye is on the sparrow, His eye is on you.” The song is a sacrifice of praise as she prays, “little girl, little girl, with the big round eyes...life, life is a vapor, but the brevity is what makes it a treasure, so feel it all, like a love letter to the One who you’ll live with forever.” Don’t miss the fantastic music video.

Misty's vocals and heartfelt sincerity in many of the songs including "Killing Me with Mercy" cause me to hang on every word she brilliantly sings. It is a standout song on this mesmerizing album reflecting Peter’s biblical story with the reflective chorus—"You’re killing me with mercy I can’t breathe, You’re wrecking me with Your kindness I can’t receive, what am I supposed to do with a God so humble? It’s breaking me, it’s crushing me.”

Misty brings home the personal and vulnerable message of the song “Summer Girl” in the lyrics, “The tapestry of Perfected Love, of pain and glory, It’s woven of…of love that lasts, not the fading kind.” I can't get enough of the prayerful and vulnerable "Mary, Mary" with the piercing words: "Mary, Mary don’t you know, humanity lives your story…forgiven much, we love all the more, we love all the more." It is a beautiful song about the redemption and calling we all have from Christ, to “love all the more.” Amen.

Misty pours her heart out in every single song which allows listeners to eavesdrop on her expressing her deep feelings, insecurities, and desires for holiness directly to God. I really enjoy how this album tells the story of redemption as each song gives a glimpse of Misty’s personal walk with Jesus.

Closing Thoughts:
Every song is a great reminder for followers of Jesus trying to live out their faith and looking for creative expressions of worship. If you are looking for the words to express your feelings to God, these songs are a wonderful companion. These are all very transparent, vulnerable and authentic songs. If you like indie-pop style "gourmet" singer-songwriters Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Regina Spektor and Audrey Assad, you need to check out Little Bird by Misty Edwards. Don’t miss the standout songs, “Invisible One,” “Little Bird,” “Audience of One,” “Killing Me with Mercy,” “Summer Girl” and “Mary, Mary.”

This entire album is loaded with relatable lyrics, incredible singing and prayerful themes about what it means to be a child of God. Musically, the album features a great mix of laid-back indie-pop and singer-songwriter folk style music. Give the album a few deep listens and you'll love it. I hang on every single word and the stirring vocals, prayerful lyrics and musical arrangements are breath-taking. This is a great new collection of very heartfelt and introspective songs, in essence Misty’s love letters to God.
