Addiction leads to epic album | Posted October 20, 2008
Anyone can dig a hole but it takes a real man to call it home. Is a strongly motivational song for me.
This, like many songs on the new CD is about Spencers addiction to cocaine. In the new Alternative Press they interviewed him and he came out and said he had a serious problem. And although he never formally checked into rehab, he says he is "clean as a whistle." He also said that writing songs about his problem has helped him release his "demons." When he came to the rest of the band with his problem, they basically told him "we dont want you in the band anymore." This really hurt spencer and didnt help his addiction, or his falling in and out of depression.
In the opening line he says "Im no leader Im jsut a mess.....I've led us all astray." To him. He is the face of Underoath along with Aaron... and he is stating that he has run this band into the ground with his problem. He then says "Are we too far gone?" This comes from when the band had a near break up and the peak up his addiction. He then says " I'm afraid no one is listening anymore." Like i said before...when he came to the rest of the band with the news of his addiction, and they turned him away. He was very hurt and was upset that they weren't acting like the Christians they should be. The rest of the song reflects his addiction and his struggle to break it. In the end he talks about "jumping or staying." This is about his battle with depression. Finally at the end of the song he is asking for forgiveness from God for all the wrong he has done.
We've all been there maybe not cocaine, maybe porn, maybe alcohol, I don't know where you've been but we have all been addicted to someone and lashed out wanting someone to listen but no one does. We ask if we have gone to far and no longer can accept forgiveness. This entire Album goes on and proves to us why we need God and how God can forgive us and will forgive us. Many thanks and 5 stars awarded to the brilliance that came out of something bad.
